New System From Photon Technology International (PTI) Reduces Cost, Increases Speed In Medical And Pharmaceutical Research And Pollutant Analysis

(Princeton, NJ) - May 26, 1987

A new electro-optical instrument which uses light to detect and measure even the tiniest trace amounts of substances, allowing cancer researchers, pharmaceutical developers, environmental control technicians and others perform key analytic procedures at speeds up to 60 times faster than other devices, is being introduced by Photon Technology International, Inc.

Called LS-1, the instrument sells for $35,000, which is approximately 40 percent less than traditional equipment that performs some of the same functions. PTI has applied for patents on proprietary technology reducing the complexity of the analytic process, time needed and costs.

Technically know as a luminescence lifetime analyzer, the LS-1 identifies and quantifies substances by the light energy they store and then emit when “excited” by other light. A cancer researcher can use this capability to determine how a drug attaches to diseased or healthy cells. An environmental specialist can find trace amounts of dangerous substances in waste samples. The company believes the LS-1 has potential for use with a very broad range of government, medical and private industry laboratories.

Easy to use, as-well-as smaller and lighter, the system is controlled entirely from a computer keyboard following program prompts on a monitor; menu-driven and user friendly, it allows even the most inexperienced operator to be trained in a short period of time. Also, because it is computerized, the LS-1 is able to store the data acquisition parameters of many users. This means that experiments need to be only set up once for infrequent or inexperienced users – a major plus in efficient use of scientific and technical personnel and time.

PTI began developing the LS-1 about 2 years ago. When the first prototype was displayed at biophysical and medical conventions earlier this year the level of interest encouraged the company to quickly accelerate its development making the number of planned prototypes more than double.

Photon Technology International designs, manufactures and markets electro-optical instrumentation which is used in the generation, detection and analysis of light in industrial, medical, and research applications.
