GENERAL

Controls

The GL-302 Dye Laser has only two operational controls: wavelength selection and aperture.

The wavelength is adjusted manually with the digital readout control. Turn the knob to select the wavelength. The wavelength is displayed in angstroms.

The aperture is opened and closed using the sliding shutter. It is open when the slider is pushed toward the body of the laser, and closed when it is pulled out.

OPERATION

Initial Setup

  1. Be sure the GL-3300 Nitrogen Laser is off.

  2. Physically position the GL-302 flush against the face of the GL-3300, with the black bands matching. Since both lasers are beam calibrated, alignment is assured when their profiles match.

  3. The lid of the GL-302 is hinged to swing back. Open the lid and carefully place the laser dye cells into their holders. Note that the holders are tilted to prevent regenerative feedback.

    NOTE: Do not touch the windows of the dye cells or any of the laser optics. Fingerprints can distort the laser beam and adversely affect performance. Hold the dye cell by the corners near the top where the beam is not transmitted.

    CAUTION: Improper cell placement can cause breakage and exposure to hazardous dye chemicals.

  4. Close the lid of the GL-302.

Operation

Although the GL-302 is a highly sophisticated high-resolution amplified dye laser, it is extremely easy and safe to use.

  1. Select the desired wavelength on the GL-302.

  2. Start the GL-3300, following the instructions.

  3. Open the shutter of the GL-302.

CAUTION: Always use appropriate laser safety goggles when operating this laser. Avoid direct exposure to the beam.

 

The GL-302 will only lase when it is tuned within the emission curve of the dyes being used. Outside of this range, the laser will continue to emit light, but the wavelength will not change and it will not exhibit the familiar diffraction pattern associated with laser beam scattering. At this point, the laser is only emitting super- radiance, and not lasing. Refer to the dye laser tuning curve for the spectral emission of the dye being used.

WARNING: Under no circumstances is it recommended or required to operate the GL-302 with the lid raised. Eye injury can result because the surfaces of the quartz dye cell can reflect a portion of the laser beam out of the compartment. Before changing the laser dye cell, always turn the GL-3300 laser off or close its shutter. Close the lid of the GL-302 before restarting the GL-3300 or opening its shutter.

 

NOTE: All of the components in the GL-302 are manufactured, assembled and aligned to exacting standards, and locked securely in place before shipment. Under no circumstances should any of these components be unlocked and/or adjusted without the express consent of a PTI Service Engineer.

A Note on Dye Cells

Not all dye cells (cuvettes) are made the same!

The laser beam travels just to the inside of the cuvette windows of the oscillator and amplifier cells. Therefore, the corners of the cuvettes can affect laser transmission. Since all cuvette window corners are not identical, it is possible that a cuvette can have a "best side." To test for this, operate the laser with different cuvette windows facing the pump beam and measure the laser energy in each position. If a best side is determined, mark the top of the cuvette to indicate which surface should face the pump beam.

Note: Remember to close the shutter of the GL-3300 before changing the position of the dye cuvette.

SERVICE

Maintenance

The GL-302 will deliver trouble-free, reliable performance in part because of the virtual absence of maintenance requirements. The only regular service required by the GL-302 is the upkeep of the laser dyes and the occasional cleaning of the dye cells (refer to the next section).

The optics of the GL-302 should never be touched or cleaned. Over time, some dust may accumulate on the optics. However, attempts to clean the optical elements can result in much more harm than the dust itself. Normal accumulations of dust will not adversely affect performance. In the event that an optical element should accumulate excessive dirt and begin to degrade performance, contact a PTI Service Engineer to determine of the part should be replaced.

Laser Dyes

Over time and with use, all laser dyes will degrade. This will result in the loss of laser energetics. Optimal performance can be maintained by simply replacing the laser dyes with fresh batches. Be sure to remove any fingerprints from the dye cells with methanol.

CAUTION: Disposable surgical gloves should be worn whenever handling laser dyes. Particular care should be taken with PTI IR laser dyes from PLD665 to PLD960. The solvents used in these dyes can readily pass through the skin and carry the dye into the bloodstream.

 

Although we recommend using laser dyes prepared by PTI, the GL-302 will operate with other properly-prepared laser dyes. If you have the desire and the means to mix your own dyes, contact PTI for a copy of the laser dye mixing instructions.

Factory Service

Photon Technology International has designed the GL-302 to provide years of dependable operation. If for any reason the unit is not performing to your satisfaction, do not hesitate to call PTI for assistance. Most problems can be resolved over the phone.

In the rare instance your laser requires more than routine service, replacement parts and service support can usually be obtained by phone. We will need a purchase order for any replacement parts you require.

It is extremely rare that a laser or any of its components must be shipped back to PTI for service. However, if such service is required, you must obtain an R.A. (Return Authorization) number from PTI before shipment. No items will be accepted at the plant without an R.A. number.

We listen to our customers. While we feel that we have developed the most advanced dye laser available, we are open to your suggestions. Please feel free to contact PTI.
